
SOS PLASTIC
SOS Plastic is a packaging and product concept that transforms a reusable water bottle into a tool for environmental awareness. Focusing on the presence of microplastics in bottled water compared to tap water, the project uses data-driven graphics and visual storytelling to reveal the often-overlooked impact of single-use plastic bottles. Additional statistics compare reusable and plastic bottles, encouraging consumers to reconsider their everyday choices and move toward more sustainable alternatives.
There are an average of 325 microplastic particles per liter in bottled water, as compared to 5.5 plastic particles per liter of tap water.


CHARACTERS
The characters "Ollie and Earl" were created to make the packaging more engaging and appealing to the target audience of children aged 3–9. By incorporating colorful, playful characters, the design aims to capture children’s attention and create an emotional connection with the product. To strengthen this connection, a set of character stickers was also developed for children to personalize their reusable water bottles and carry their favorite characters with them. This interactive element extends the experience beyond the packaging and encourages children to develop a sense of ownership and attachment to the product.
The project targets parents and children aged 3–9, with a particular focus on parents who are highly concerned about their children’s health and safety. At this age, children are especially receptive to playful and engaging design, while parents play the key role in making decisions about their well-being. The project aims to educate parents about the hidden health risks associated with microplastics in bottled water and encourage them to choose tap water as a safer alternative for their children. By highlighting the significantly lower microplastic content of tap water, alongside its financial and environmental benefits, the project empowers families to make a safer, smarter, and more sustainable choice.

Individuals consuming only bottled water can ingest around 90,000 microplastic particles per year, compared to 4,000 from tap water.
Ingesting microplastics may cause cellular damage, gut microbiome disruption, hormonal imbalances, toxin accumulation, neurological effects, and chronic inflammation , potentially leading to long-term health risks.
One million plastic bottles are bought around the world every minute , which is about 1.3 billion bottles per day.
An individual who only drinks bottled water buys an average of 730 bottles per year and spends around $1,000–$1,500 .
An individual who only drinks tap water buys an average of 1 bottle (reusable water bottle) per year and spends around $20-$50.
At best, less than 1/3 of all plastic bottles will be recycled.
Approximately 50% of all plastic produced globally is used for single-use products , including plastic water bottles.
